SDH Capital is a family office based in Mayfair, owned by Malta based db Group. Our primary focus is to identify new international business opportunities and to manage the Group’s international interests. 

With a staff compliment of 4,500 the db Group operates in the hotels and restaurant, contract catering, healthcare and real estate sectors.

We actively consider international joint ventures opportunities across all our lines of business.

Our Business

Hotels

The db Group is the market leader in the  superior all-inclusive market in Malta with 1,053 keys across two 2 properties, namely, db Seabank Resort + Spa and db San Antonio Hotel + Spa. The Group also owns and operates a boutique hotel in Valletta and will soon start construction work on a 5-star Hard Rock Hotel in St.Julians. This property will be operated by the Group.

Over the past decade the Group invested heavily in human resources, processes and technology and this has enabled us to perfect our all-inclusive model. Thanks to this investment our hotel resorts are today amongst the most sought after in the Mediterranean with travellers and international tour operators. 

With occupancy levels now back to pre-pandemic levels and and with above industry EBITDA margins we look forward sharing this success with our new partners.

Restaurants

The db Group has also sought to strategically invest in the catering industry by bringing to Malta globally recognised brands like Hard Rock Cafe’ and Starbucks.

Over a period of four years the Group opened 14 Starbucks stores which will increase to 18 by the end of 2023. We also operate two Hard Rock restaurants with a third one in the pipeline.

We currently own and operate eight independent restaurants across the Maltese Islands which will increase to 12 by the end of 2023. 2024 will mark the opening of a flagship restaurant in London’s trendy Mayfair.

Our Business

Healthcare & Contract Catering

The Group further diversified its interest in complementary businesses like airline catering and contract catering. Together we prepare and serve around 18,000 meals a day across a number of institutions including a care home and hospital.

The Group has also made substantial investments in the healthcare industry, and today is the largest private employer in Malta of doctors, nurses, carers and helpers. One of our most recent projects in this portfolio is a EUR40 million geriatric hospital. This project involved the construction of new buildings and facilities as well as managing the 504 beds that accommodate its residents. We also provide home care services in the community.

Our Business

Real Estate

The Group entered the property development market as a strategic move – to develop our own projects. Today, we expanded our operations to include other real estate ventures.

Our latest project is the proposed db City Centre in the Golden Mile, St. Julian’s, one of Malta’s prime seaside hospitality and entertainment locations and right across St George’s Bay, a blue flag urban beach.

With an investment of around €200m, the db City Centre will feature the Mediterranean’s third 5-star Hard Rock Hotel, a shopping mall, several bars and restaurants, private residences and almost 7,000 sqm of public space.

Nicholas Portelli

Managing Director

A graduate in finance and investments, Nicholas has been involved in financial services and real estate for the past twenty-five years. 

In his former role as Chief Executive of a listed financial services company, he oversaw the firm’s investment, insurance and property divisions and was responsible for property acquisitions in various countries around the world.

In 2012 Nicholas set up and managed a boutique real estate advisory firm based in central London. In 2022 he relinquished this role and was appoint Managing Director of SDH Capital.

Nicholas is a non-Executive Director serving on the Boards of companies involved in retail and real estate. He specialises in asset management and investments.

Robert Debono

Director and Group CEO

Robert graduated in management from the University of Malta and during his first years working in the Group he held various posts in the healthcare arm of the business working in operations, accounts and HR, gaining valuable experience in the different areas of the business.

The eldest of Silvio Debono’s four children, he was responsible of the rebranding and refurbishment of the Group’s restaurants in 2017 and also spearheaded the Group’s restaurants expansion with the opening of some of the flagship restaurants namely Nine Lives, Aki and Loa.  This expansion is still ongoing with other four new restaurants slated to be opened during this year.

Robert was appointed CEO in 2020 and sits on all the Group’s boards, including contract catering and healthcare.

Alan Debono

Director

Alan joined the company in 2017 and has worked his way up through the different positions within the Finance Department, pertaining to the various companies within the Group and becoming a certified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 2020.  

Alan sits on the Group’s Board of Directors and is currently responsible for the Operational and Capital Procurement of the group’s ongoing and upcoming projects, while also working closely with the Group’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
